Hotel Savoy

Hotel Savoy doesn’t just provide accommodations; it offers a piece of history that dates back to the 1800s. The hotel was built in 1888 in the midst of the economic boom in Kansas City. It underwent remodeling in 1903 wherein the west wing was added as well as the Savoy Grill, said to be the oldest restaurant in Kansas City. As a symbol of opulence and elegance at the time, the hotel became host to some well-known personalities including US Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Other guests who stayed in the Hotel Savoy were John D. Rockefeller, W.C. Fields, Marie Dressler, Will Rogers, Lillian Russell, and Sara Bernhardt.

 

The Savoy Grill also held a renowned reputation in the early 1900s. It even had a President’s Booth where Warren Harding, Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan, and Gerald Ford once dined. The restaurant was exclusive only to men when it was first opened but this was soon changed. House specialties were prairie chicken and buffalo steak. After dinner, tables were pushed aside to make room for some live music and dancing.

 

This luxurious Kansas City hotel experienced hardships during the Great Depression and was already in disrepair in the 1960s. By the next decade, business picked up and the hotel and its famous restaurant were once again receiving guests regularly. In 1974, the Hotel Savoy was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel was renovated in 1985 and the rooms were converted into classic Bed and Breakfast accommodations. As the renovation was going on, a number of artifacts were found and were subsequently added as designs and exhibits in the various rooms of the hotel. Today, the Hotel Savoy is a vibrant historic fixture of Kansas City.
