Kansas City Police Department
The Kansas City Police Department was established in 1874 with the appointment of the first chief of police. Since then, 34 men have already headed the police department.
Kansas City Police was one of the first law enforcement agencies to adopt a more advanced communication system. In the early 1900s, the department used the Gamewell Communication System, an electric police alarm box operated on telegraphic principles that allows patrol officers to send messages to headquarters.
It was in 1931 that the police radio was first used by the Kansas City Police. With this device, the police dispatcher at the headquarters can send messages to the patrol cruiser in the field. However, the radio does not enable the police officer to respond to the dispatcher. To solve this problem, two-way radios were installed in patrol cars in 1935.
Today, officers of the Kansas City Police are equipped with a walkie talkie or radio equipment and a computer.
