Kansas City Police Department
The Kansas City Police Department was established in 1898. During that time, there were only 46 persons who made up the department. 1914 marked a significant period in the institution, as it is one of the first public safety departments to have its own motorcycle unit. Moreover, the department had innovated in the field of keeping and analyzing criminal records as early as 1918, having established a system of taking photographs and fingerprints of all criminals in jail. By the time the mid 1930s arrived, they had incorporated five surrounding cities. As a result, the Department grew in number with 129 officers. Police service increased significantly to meet the needs of Kansas City. Progress grew even more, when the agency became the first police force on the west of the Mississippi River to install a two-way radio communications system in the year 1934.
