As of the records of the census of 2002, Kansas City, Missouri had the following demographics.

 

 

The population at that point in time totaled to approximately 440,885 people, from which 210,000 households and 107,444 families were formed. The margin of error was for these figures amounted to +/- 9,193 people, though it is evident that Kansas City is steadily increasing, with 3,618 housing permits granted in 2004 and 2005. The population density stood at 1,408.2 people per square mile, or 543.7 people per square kilometer. The racial make-up was predominantly White Caucasian (60.68%); a sizable percentage of African Americans (31.23%); a considerable percentage of Hispanics or Latinos (6.93%); few Asians (1.85%); few people from other races (3.21%), a smaller number of people from mixed races (2.44%), and some few individuals of Native American (0.48%) descent.

 

Among the 183,981 households, 28.1% had minors (children under 18 years of age) living with them; 38.0% comprised of married couples living together; 16.0% had female householder with no husband present; while 41.6% were non-famlies. Studies have also shown that 34.1% of all households were comprised of individuals, while 9.4% had were people living alone who was 65 years of age or older. In those records, the average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.30.

 

The city’s population had spread out to 31.3% being under the age of 18 (minors); 6.3% of the population being in ages of 18 to 24; ages 25 to 44 were at a considerable percentage of 30.2%; 22.5% was the percentage of people aged 45 -64; while the remaining 6.7% were the senior citizens, aged 65 years of age and older. The average age of people in Kansas City is 34 years, with the female to male ration being 100: 93.3 respectively. Though for every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were only 89.9 males.

Households in Kansas City had an average income of $37,198, while the median family income was $46,012. Males are still the higher earners, bringing home an average income of $35,132 as opposed to females who only bring in an average $27,548. Kansas City’s per capita income was $20,753 . Families below the poverty line constituted 11.1% — around 14.3% of the population.
